Rosé season has ushered in its annual flood of pink bottles—many of them mediocre at best. Even Provence, the birthplace of rosé, is responsible for many lackluster versions, so it pays to be selective. This week’s Tasting Highlights showcases 10 bottlings worth seeking out this summer, including wines from Miraval, Château d’Esclans, Château Routas, Domaine de Terrebrune and Clos Ste.-Magdeleine.
For serious, weightier, more nuanced versions, look to Provence’s most elite appellation, Bandol, a small coastal town just east of Marseille. The Mourvèdre grape, rather than Grenache, dominates here, which explains why Bandol’s rosés are more structured and ageworthy than Provence rosés in general. Beyond Bandol, several estates’ Côtes de Provence bottlings offer more complexity and flavor than generic Provence rosés.
